CHST 682 - Is God On Our Side? The Rise of the Christian Right in Modern America

3 credits
The rise of what is often called the New Christian Right (NCR) is one of the most significant historical developments in the U.S. over the last half-century. This seminar follows the rise of the NCR as part of the conservative turn in US politics during that period, giving attention to the complex entanglements of politics, economics, and popular media with Christian theological ideas and practices. The course deepens our understanding of the recent history of the U.S. by examining how versions of right-wing Christianity shape and reflect notions of national identity, purpose, and mission. It also invites us into a deeper engagement with American Christianity, with a goal of understanding assessing the appeal of right-wing expressions of Christian faith and practice. Course may be repeated. Prerequisite: CHST 503  or its equivalent. Signature of instructor required for registration.
