HC 814 - The West in Myth and History3 credits The West had long been a mythic abode, where the realities of exploration, settlement, resource exploitation, federal control, and commercial development often clash with the image of the West as depicted in popular culture. This seminar explores the roots of the myth and its impact on political, social, and cultural outcomes, as well as the historical realities that have shaped the region. Course materials include both texts and film.
