CE 215 - Community and Vocation: Colloquium on Nonprofits and the Alternative Economy

4 credits
Combines the study of nonprofit organizations and other aspects of the ‘alternative economy’, or those who work for the larger public good outside of government and private industry. The course develops students’ knowledge of the range of organizations, models, and social concerns that exist; fosters critical perspectives on issues in this sector such as the problems of service delivery, structural inequality, and funding models; and facilitates students’ exploration of vocations dedicated to the greater good. The course will give special attention to writing in the range of genres that professionals use, such as web-based writing, policy briefs, grant proposals, mission statements, and fundraising appeals. Students will complete field-based research, advocacy, or service projects that address specific needs of organizations, and present those projects in a public forum. This course is a Community-Based learning course, so students must commit 20-30 hours across the semester to off-campus experiences.  Times to be determined. CLA- Off-Campus Experience
